Systemic Family Therapy
At the Children’s Wellness Centre, we understand that when one family member is experiencing difficulties, it can have an impact on the whole family. Systemic Family Therapy provides a safe, supportive space to explore relationships, improve communication and work together towards positive, lasting change.
Delivered by our Systemic Family Practitioner and Counsellor, this approach looks beyond the individual to understand how family relationships, communication patterns and life experiences influence one another. Rather than focusing on blame, systemic family therapy helps families recognise their strengths, gain new perspectives and develop healthier ways of supporting each other.
Family therapy may be recommended instead of one-to-one counselling for a child when the difficulties they are experiencing are closely connected to family relationships, communication, or changes within the home. Rather than focusing solely on the child, family therapy helps all family members understand one another’s perspectives, improve communication, strengthen relationships, and work together to support positive change. This approach recognises that a child’s wellbeing is often influenced by the wider family system and that lasting improvements can be achieved when the whole family is involved.

How Does Systemic Family Therapy work?
Family therapy is centred around the person seeking support. When this person is a child, therapy is usually initiated by a parent or other adult with parental responsibility.
The process begins with an initial consultation with the parent or caregiver to explore the reasons for seeking therapy, understand your family’s circumstances, and discuss who may benefit from being involved in future sessions.
From the second session onwards, the child will usually attend alongside their parent or caregiver, with other family members invited to join as appropriate. Depending on your family’s circumstances and the goals of therapy, this may include siblings, grandparents, or other significant people in the child’s life.
One of the unique aspects of systemic family therapy is its flexibility. The people attending sessions may change over time, depending on what emerges during the therapeutic process and what will best support the child and family. Some sessions may involve the whole family, while others may focus on parents, siblings, or individual family members.
Sessions and Fees
Sessions are 80 minutes long, allowing sufficient time for everyone to contribute, feel heard, and work together towards positive change.
Systemic Family Therapy is generally considered a short-term intervention, with many families benefiting from around 6–12 sessions. However, every family is unique, and where appropriate, therapy can be adapted to meet more complex or longer-term needs.
Each 80 minute session is charged at £125 (this includes VAT).
